  1. you have included a lot of texture and tone to this, while using a minimum of color; very well executed…I love it!

  2. Thanks for the comment, mab. My concern over this piece is: what do the drawings of the apple have to do with the lettering? I like it visually, but there is no real relationship to the words and the images … although there is a connection between my approaches to the words and the lettering.

  3. I am inspired by your work, Beth! I need a calligraphic pen now to add to my sketches! Wonderful pages you are doing – I love checking in on them each day.

  4. Beth, I can’t make out all the words, but it does seem to me there’s a metaphorical connection between the text and the apple, at least as a play on the phrase “apple of one’s eye.” Regardless, I don’t think an overt connection between the text and the imagery is required. The text could easily be in a language other than English, and it would still provide weight and texture to the composition. This is a lovely piece.

  5. Love all your word art! I know all those words must have taken some time…good therapty!
    Very nice.

  6. Thanks, Lily, you’re right. And now I seem to remember a connection now that I think about it — I just can’t remember what it was. I guess it’s enough that there was a connection at the time. And I do like the contrast of textures between the smudgy gray pencil and the sharper lines of the bronze ink.

And thanks, starrgirla and melba, for your comments too.

  7. There doesn’t always need to be a connection, if it works, it works and that can be enough! I used to beat myself up over things being ‘just so’ and having to justify them but it’s a waste of creative energy. (IMHO!) This piece has a real strength and you’ve inspired me too – I’d forgotten how beautiful and emotional calligraphy is – think I might dig out my pens too!
