The Friday Illustration theme this week is “Broken.” I think this John Stuart Mill quotation is on topic. Before anyone asks, this week it’s not doubling as a bookmark 🙂 … But it could, couldn’t it? Hmmm. The original is about 2″ x 8″, white ink and colored pencils on black charcoal paper. (Click twice to see the scan at full size.)

This is just lovely…it really comes out in the larger version! It’s simple, lyrical, and perfect to illustrate Mills’ words.
Very delicate and beautiful. I love how the text hugs close to the flower. well done!
Beautiful Beth!
Don’t you just love working on black paper, I do.
Thanks for the kind comments, everyone. Yes, I *love* working on black paper. It hides a multitude of sins. I was interested to see that I colored over the white in candy-corn colors. You think I was influenced by the season?
This looks very elegant. I like the way you included the text.

Coool illo!! lovely!
This reminds me of posters I used to see hanging in the local Anglican church when I was a kid. You’ve married the illustration and quote beautifully.
