Journals & Sketchbooks

- 5 students max

In this class I will cover the basic techniques of bookbinding and we will explore several different book structures. We will begin the first week with a simple pamphlet book for your notes and ideas, and we'll learn about folding, scoring, grain, trimming, and discuss basic terms, principles, and materials. In successive weeks we'll make a drum leaf book for finished work, a French link stitch book, a sampler of variations such as windows and pockets, and finish with a hard-cover multi-section long-stitch book.

Brush & Pointed Pen Lettering

- 5 students max

We will be working with both the pointed brush and pointed pen because gesture, pressure, and tempo are important to both tools. We will begin with a Pentel Color Brush and then move on to a couple of pointed pen nibs. I will introduce you to a number of scripts and we will also explore how to study and analyze scripts you may wish to adapt. We're starting with the basics, so beginners are welcome. On the last day of class, we will bind our notes and practice sheets into a book that will be a record of your work in the class.
