Calligraphy class
Week 4
Homework:
- Lettering practice -- continue with the standard italic or experiment with one of the variations on the handout. Add capitals to your lettering practice using the italic capitals handout. Continue with sumi ink and pen, or try lettering with gouache or watercolor, loaded with a brush as demonstrated.
- Continue to develop your quotation -- try tweaking one of the layouts you've already done, or try something new.
The week in review:
- handouts -- italic variations and an italic capitals exemplar; discussion of how letter width and letter spacing can affect the "color" of the text
- demo - how changes in pen angle change the character of letter weights, and why slanting a letter requires a commensurate change in pen angle
- individual work time and critique; problem solving re: tools and materials
- discussion - Speedball C nibs vs. Mitchell Roundhand nibs vs. Brauser nibs
- demo - gouache and Mitchell nibs
