Calligraphy class: the FAQ

  • How many students will there be in the class? I will take a maximum of 10 students.
  • How do I register for the class? Sign up here to register for the class. Email me if you have questions.
  • What tools and materials will I need on the first day of class? Nothing is required for the first day of class. If you already have these items, please bring them:
    • ZIG two-ended calligraphy marker. If you do not have one, I will have plenty available to borrow for the week. These are sometimes available at Joann Fabrics, but not at Michaels.
    • A drawing board of any suitably rigid material, at least 14" x 18". I will have extras, but if there are not enough to go around, it will be all right to work flat on the first day.
  • What supplies will I need for the remaining sessions? See the list at right. Not all of these are available locally. On the first day of class, I'll take information from anyone who wishes to be included in a group order. I'll make the order the following day so that those purchases will be available at the next class meeting. The order form will look like this, with extra spaces so that you can order anything else that interests you on the John Neal site (see below).
  • Are these the only tools and materials we will use in the class? No. Feel free to bring any tools and materials you'd like to use in the class. I've chosen this basic list for those just starting out because they are relatively inexpensive, easy to use, and easy to find. Throughout the course I'll bring other tools and materials for you to try out.
  • What are the links on the items at the right? I've linked some of the hard-to-find items to John Neal Bookseller, one of two excellent calligraphy supply companies. The other is Paper & Ink Arts.
  • Can you recommend a good drawing board? If you have a sturdy board you like, by all means bring it. I have been happy with the 1/4" Plexiglas boards 16" x 20" I ordered from Western Glass. Cost: $17 each.
  • Can I buy any of the other tools and materials locally? MSU Bookstore carries many art supplies, including the Strathmore Drawing 300 paper, some sumi ink, Speedball nibs. Michaels also carries the paper and general art supplies.
Required tools & materials: Recommended, not required:
  • Lining guide - metric or standard
  • T-square, 18" or longer - get a sturdy one if you plan to use it with the lining guide, as I do
