    A manuscript book is a handwritten book that may also contain original artwork. In this class we will:
  • Examine a variety of manuscript books (I have a large collection), looking at content, structure, and materials;
  • Learn about the basic parts of a manuscript book: text block, title page, colophon, endpapers, covers, structurs, and so on;
  • Explore the underlying formal geometry of medieval manuscript books — which we may or may not use as the basis for our book layouts, as you prefer;
  • Choose content for our books;
  • Evaluate a variety of layout possibilities;
  • Experiment with tools and materials, for text block as well as for cover and endpapers;
  • Critique and practice letter forms;
  • Settle on a text style, write out the entire text, and determine exact layout;
  • Learn how to practice the lettering which will form the text block;
  • Letter the text block in final form; and finally,
  • Bind our manuscript books.
