{"id":96,"date":"2006-11-28T00:24:00","date_gmt":"2006-11-28T00:24:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/callibeth.com\/blog\/?p=96"},"modified":"2006-11-28T00:24:00","modified_gmt":"2006-11-28T00:24:00","slug":"an-inconvenient-truth","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/callibeth.com\/blog\/2006\/11\/28\/an-inconvenient-truth\/","title":{"rendered":"An Inconvenient Truth"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Here&#8217;s some news that just ruined my day. <a href=\"http:\/\/www.boingboing.net\/2006\/11\/27\/exxon_kills_free_cla.html\">Boing Boing<\/a> reports that the National Science Teachers Association has <span style=\"font-style: italic;\">refused<\/span> 50,000 free copies of Al Gore&#8217;s documentary film, &#8220;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.climatecrisis.net\/\">An Inconvenient Truth<\/a>&#8220;. Why? Here the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/wp-dyn\/content\/article\/2006\/11\/24\/AR2006112400789_pf.html\">Washington Post op-ed article<\/a> (written by producer Laurie David) quotes the NSTA&#8217;s reasoning in its e-mail refusal:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Accepting the DVDs, they wrote, would place &#8220;unnecessary risk upon the [NSTA] capital campaign, especially certain targeted supporters.&#8221; One of those supporters, it turns out, is the Exxon Mobil Corp.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>I saw the documentary film when it came out. I had a very selfish reason for not wanting to go see it: I believed I would just become more upset than I already am about our government&#8217;s role in perpetuating our abuse of our environment. But the facts and ideas were presented so thoughtfully and methodically that it was a pleasure to see it all laid out so clearly &#8212; sorry though that picture is.<\/p>\n<p>At <a href=\"http:\/\/www.wired.com\/wired\/archive\/14.07\/posts.html?pg=6\">Wired Magazine<\/a>, Lawrence Lessig wrote, about the film:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>About halfway through, Gore cites two studies to explain why so many people remain so skeptical about global warming. The first looked at a random sample of almost 1,000 abstracts on climate change in peer-reviewed scientific journals from 1993 to 2003 and found that exactly zero doubted \u201cthat we\u2019re causing global warming.\u201d The second surveyed a random sample of more than 600 articles about global warming in popular media between 1988 and 2002 and discovered that 53 percent questioned \u201cthat we\u2019re causing global warming.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>See the trailer <a href=\"http:\/\/imdb.com\/title\/tt0497116\/trailers\">here<\/a>.
