{"id":108,"date":"2007-02-08T01:11:00","date_gmt":"2007-02-08T01:11:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/callibeth.com\/blog\/?p=108"},"modified":"2007-02-08T01:11:00","modified_gmt":"2007-02-08T01:11:00","slug":"the-fine-press-designers-dilemma","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/callibeth.com\/blog\/2007\/02\/08\/the-fine-press-designers-dilemma\/","title":{"rendered":"The Fine Press Designer&#8217;s Dilemma"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The <a href=\"http:\/\/www.caxtonclub.org\/reading\/2007\/feb07.pdf\">February issue<\/a> <span style=\"font-size:85%;\">(PDF link) <\/span>of the Caxton Club&#8217;s journal <span style=\"font-style: italic;\">Caxtonian<\/span> features an intriguing article by Michael Russem, of Kat Ran Press, entitled &#8220;The Failure of Fine Printing.&#8221; He tells of the book edition he so carefully crafted, following, he thought, the best principles of book design &#8212; only to have his most avid collector tell him: <span style=\"font-style: italic;\">I don&#8217;t buy your books to read<\/span>.<\/p>\n<p>This quotation encapsulates the main theme of the article:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Because we are so accustomed to mass market productions, the physical elements and processes traditionally chosen for fine press books\u2014handmade paper, letterpress, and hand bindings\u2014are foreign to the average reader and thus call too much attention to themselves, over stimulating the senses and spirit. It is impossible to handle them without relishing in the deliciousness of the materials \u2014 though all the while feeling panic over the possibility of damaging these precious items.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>He concludes that fine binding is an <span style=\"font-style: italic;\">impediment<\/span> to the reading of the text, making them an example of bad design &#8230; while paperbacks, whose materials are so commonplace as to become invisible, function successfully as vehicles for the text.<\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;m not doing the article justice; read it for yourself.
